Diminutive Swan Hill Pottery (South Amboy, NJ) attributed Rockingham-Glazed Grape Ice Pitcher - Diminutive Swan Hill Pottery (South Amboy, NJ) attributed Rockingham-Glazed Grape Ice Pitcher Mottled manganese and lead glazes over buff earthenware body, relief-molded low-bellied round form with high relief grapevine decorations all throughout, applied thick branch handle split at the top, pronounced foot with unmarked base. Retains matching cover with similar grapevine decorations and a branch-form loop finial. Attributed to the Swan Hill Pottery. Mid 19th century. Dimensions: 6 1/2” H, 3 7/8” D base. Condition: Cover: Undamaged. Pitcher: Excellent condition with minor high point wear to body and a mold flaw consisting of two short (less than 1”) drying splits/separations along either side of the applied spout. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased in October or November 1980 (source not recorded). Catalogue Note: It is generally understood that these pitchers are the ”Grape Ice Pitchers” described in a Swan Hill price list published during James Carr's tenure (circa 1852-1854). They were offered in at least three sizes by this point (Branin 1988, p. 200). They were sold both with and without covers, but empirical research indicates that they very rarely survive with their original covers, if they even had one to begin with. More than one NJ maker may have produced these, but this example most closely resembles the version associated with Carr's tenure at Swan Hill, which is said to have been modeled by Daniel Greatbach (Stradling 2005, p. 57). A larger example signed with an early Swan Hill mark can be seen in Crocker Farm's July 20th, 2019 auction, lot 67.
