American Relief-Molded Rockingham-Glazed Large Corn Pitcher - American Relief-Molded Rockingham-Glazed Large Corn Pitcher Streaky brown mottled Rockingham glaze over buff-colored yellowware body, relief-molded decoration featuring corn plants all over, molded and applied branch handle split at the top with a punched dot in relief at lower handle attachment, unmarked base. Mid 19th century. Dimensions: 12” H, 6 3/8” D base. Condition: Undamaged with minor high point wear to body. A glazed-over separation below thumbrest and some roughness to footring, as made. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased on Valentine's Day, 1968 (source not recorded). Catalogue Note: By all accounts, one of the most iconic designs ever executed in American Rockingham ware, deservedly chosen for the front cover of one of the few books on the subject (Claney 2004, cover). The design was modeled by Josiah Jones in Brooklyn NY for use at the porcelain factory of Charles Cartlidge & Co. between 1848 and 1856 (Stradling 2005, pg. 26-29). The maker of the Rockingham versions is unknown, but a likely candidate is James Carr, who is known to have purchased materials (specifically, feldspar and/or flint, which are ingredients in glazes) directly from a Greenpoint pottery (probably Cartlidge's), during the early days of his tenure at the Swan Hill Pottery in South Amboy NJ (Branin 1988, p. 198). It's believed that he could have acquired this pitcher's mold directly from Cartlidge at that time, although this theory has never been proven.
