Rare Stamped ”CITY POTTERY” (James Carr, New York, NY) Rockingham-Glazed Relief-Molded Ferns Pitcher - Rare Stamped ”CITY POTTERY” (James Carr, New York, NY) Rockingham-Glazed Relief-Molded Ferns Pitcher Deep brown mottled Rockingham glaze over yellowware body; pear shaped octagonal form with molded design either side featuring dense ferns/foliage below a wide band of grapevines and high-relief grape clusters, stamped ”CITY POTTERY / WEST 13TH ST. N. Y.” to underside. Circa 1855. Dimensions: 11 3/4” H. Condition: Very good condition overall with heavy wear to high points of decoration around waist, a 5/8” chip to spout, roughness to thumbrest, and a glue-stabilized stress crack/separation across handle at its midsection. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased from Ted Geers, 10/06/1978. Catalogue Note: An extremely rare piece from the earliest period of James Carr's time in New York. Carr established his pottery in Manhattan in late 1855 or 1856 after his departure from South Amboy's Swan Hill Pottery, following its burning in 1854 (Branin 1988, p. 198). Carr started out by making Rockingham and yellowware (like the present example) which was probably very similar to the ware made during his tenure at Swan Hill. Yellowware was only briefly produced however, and the firm would soon shift its focus to whiteware and majolica in subsequent decades (Ketchum 1987, p. 66). Another of these rare Carr pitchers, formerly in the Jay & Emma Lewis collection, can be found at the University of Richmond Museums, where it is object no. ”R2012.01.197”.
