Morris & Willmore (Trenton, New Jersey) Whiteware Five-Piece Drinking Set - Morris & Willmore (Trenton, New Jersey) Whiteware Five-Piece Drinking Set White earthenware/white granite body with clear lead glaze; the set consisting of a tankard pitcher and four matching mugs, each transfer-printed with various drinking-themed scenes of merriment surrounded by a vivid green ground. All with partially-legible ”MW” monogram and ”MORRIS WILLMORE CO. / TRENTON, N.J.” stamp to undersides. Late 19th/early 20th century. Dimensions: 11 1/4” H pitcher, 4” H mugs. Condition: Undamaged, with some minor as-made bubbling/distortion to enamels in a couple places. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased from Mrs. Inconiglios, 09/12/1972. Catalogue Note: Trenton pottery scholar David Goldberg humorously noted that ”the artistic brilliance of this company was not matched by its commercial acumen” due to the fact that the company operated for less than fifteen years (from 1892 to 1906). The firm was also sometimes referred to as the ”Columbian Art Pottery”. The firm's proprietors, William T. Morris and F. R. Willmore, had worked together at Royal Worcester and then at Ott & Brewer, before eventually joining forces to form the partnership which produced and decorated this drinking set.
