Hans Nosek for Gilman Collamore & Co., Hand-Painted Porcelain Art Nouveau Cabinet Plate - Hans Nosek for Gilman Collamore & Co., Hand-Painted Porcelain Art Nouveau Cabinet Plate Glossy white porcelain encrusted with heavy foliate gilt decorations over a green ground at rim surrounding a shoulder-length portrait of a woman at center (after Jean-Baptiste Greuze), inscribed ”J.B. Greuze” at left and signed ”H Nosek” at right; pink retailer's stamp to underside reading ”GILMAN COLLAMORE & CO. / FIFTH AVENUE & 30TH ST / NEW YORK / MADE IN ENGLAND” below the ”GJ & SONS” maker's mark (for England's George Jones & Sons). Late 19th/early 20th century. Dimensions: 10 1/8” D. Condition: Virtually undamaged with minor wear to painted surface and gilding at outer rim and cavetto. Catalogue Note: Gilman Collamore & Co. occupied two stories of retail space in The Wilbraham, a historic New York City building which opened in 1890. The plate's painter, Hans Nosek, was a Czech immigrant who painted on a freelance basis for various firms, including Lenox in Trenton from 1903 to 1907 (Frelinghuysen 1989, p. 55).
