Brooklyn, NY Attributed Miniature Porcelain Corn Creamers / Toy Pitchers, Lot of Two - Brooklyn, NY Attributed Miniature Porcelain Corn Creamers / Toy Pitchers, Lot of Two Glossy white porcelain, thickly potted, the larger example having relief-molded decoration featuring corn plants all over and the smaller example having similar decoration surrounding a blank/smooth oval on either side; both with branch handles, the larger pitcher stamped ”12” to underside, the smaller with an unmarked base. Probably Charles Cartlidge & Co. or possibly one of the Boch factories (Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY). Circa 1848-1860. Dimensions: Smaller, 3 7/16” H and 1 3/4” D base. Larger, 3 7/8” H and 2” D base. Condition: Smaller: Undamaged. Larger: Moderate high point wear and some discolored rubbing primarily to right side. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Smaller: Purchased sometime between 1972 and 1975 (source not recorded). Larger: Purchased in September of 1982 (source not recorded). Catalogue Note: These small pitchers, and the related examples in this auction (lots 52 through 54) are miniature counterparts to the Cartlidge firm's famous ”Maize” pattern pitchers. Another miniature, this one with decoration, can be seen at the Brooklyn Museum under accession no. ”43.128.54”. The smaller example in this lot is the smallest recorded size in this pattern. Its size probably identifies it as a ”toy pitcher”, the production of which was noted by Cartlidge's descendants (Frelinghuysen 1989, p. 113). It could also function as a single-serve creamer for use in restaurants, a possibility noted by ceramics scholar Meta Janowitz (personal communication, 2026). For now both are intriguing possibilities, but it is worth noting that later whiteware potteries in Trenton offered both pressed ”Toy” and ”Restaurant” sized creamers at the exact same price point, according to several 1870s price lists recently consulted at the Special Collections & University Archives in Rutgers University's Alexander Library. If there are differences between the two types of miniatures, they are not noted in the price lists.
