Brooklyn, NY Attributed Presentation Porcelain Corn Pitcher for ”Coles” - Brooklyn, NY Attributed Presentation Porcelain Corn Pitcher for ”Coles” Glossy white porcelain with elegant gilt highlights and tracing, relief-molded decoration featuring corn plants all over, branch handle, unmarked base. Gilt presentation inscription for ”Coles.” below spout. Probably Charles Cartlidge & Co. Circa 1848-1856. Dimensions: 8” H, 4” D base. Condition: Undamaged with minor losses to gilding/decoration around handle, rim, and the ”L” in ”Coles”. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased from M. Birdsall, 10/09/1983. Catalogue Note: This pitcher, and the related examples in this auction (lots 52 through 54) are fine examples of the Cartlidge firm's famous ”Maize” pattern pitchers. The design originated with Cartlidge, and was modeled at his suggestion by Cartlidge's brother-in-law Josiah Jones (Barber 1895, p. 23). However, it is known that the pattern was made elsewhere in Greenpoint, by the Boch brothers (Frelinghuysen 1989, p. 116). The deep crazing and relatively thin body of the present example would seem to support an attribution to Cartlidge, rather than the Boch factory.
