American Rockingham-Glazed Figural ”Coachman” Yellowware Flask / Bottle - American Rockingham-Glazed Figural ”Coachman” Yellowware Flask / Bottle Yellow-orange lead glaze mottled with manganese over buff earthenware body, relief-molded cylindrical form depicting a cloaked hat-wearing ”Coachman” holding a beer pitcher, copied from a Bennington design. Possibly stamped to underside (completely illegible if so). Second half 19th century. Dimensions: 9 1/8” H, 4 1/4” D base. Condition: Undamaged. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Catalogue Note: Obviously not a Bennington example, but certainly copied from the well-known Bennington type ”Coachman” flasks (Barret 1958, p. 321). The deep orange color and speckled glaze are attractive in their own way. The piece bears a superficial resemblance to a yellowware book flask (also copied from a Bennington original) which was made in Trenton, NJ by William Young.
