Rare Bennington Flint-Enamel / Rockingham-Glazed Figural Book Flask Stamped ”PSALMS / L.F. & CO.” - Rare Bennington Flint-Enamel / Rockingham-Glazed Figural Book Flask Stamped ”PSALMS / L.F. & CO.” Clear lead glaze over light-brown Rockingham with some blue flecking to front and rear covers, with vibrant blue and orange mottled coloring along pages and spout. Stamped ”PSALMS. / L. F. & Co. / PATENT.” to spine, also faintly stamped with a letter ”U” benchmark above. Lyman, Fenton & Co. (The United States Pottery Co.), Bennington, VT. 1849-1858 Dimensions: 6 1/8” H, 3 7/8” x 2” base. Condition: Excellent condition with roughness to one corner, a small glaze pop to bottom extremity of spine, and a glazed-over firing separation on pages near midsection, as made. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Abraham & May Antiques, Granville, Massachusetts (retains sticker). Catalogue Note: Bennington book flasks, whether or not they are stamped with a title, are only very rarely signed. When signed, they usually bear Barret's ”Mark A” or ”Mark C” stamp (Barret 1958, p. 316). The present flask's previous owners - Abraham & May - noted the ”unique mark” on the piece, as seen on their old price tag. The mark, standing for ”Lyman, Fenton & Co.”, is not unrecorded, but it is most certainly very very rare, known on just one or two other examples (Wade 2025, p. 20).
