Bennington Attributed Flint-Enamel / Rockingham-Glazed Nameplate Plaque - Bennington Attributed Flint-Enamel / Rockingham-Glazed Nameplate Plaque Mottled metallic-brown Rockingham glaze over buff-colored earthenware body, molded rectangular form with conforming inset groove/channel around a hollow region containing applied porcelain/whiteware lettering for ”N. K. CHADWICK” (a mid-19th century dry goods dealer in Gardiner, Maine), mounted to a yellow-green felt-lined backing board and sponge-decorated lacquered modern frame. Attributed to Lyman, Fenton & Co. (The United States Pottery Co.), Bennington, VT. 1849-1858. Dimensions: 7 1/2” x 3 3/8” object, 12” x 8 1/4” frame. Condition: Undamaged with minor wear and some staining to the nameplate and moderate accumulated grime around lettering. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Catalogue Note: Although a number of ambitious Rockingham-producing factories could have made lettered nameplates like this, the present example can be attributed to Bennington due to its lettering's distinctive font as well as the letters' flat backs (Barret 1958, p. 139, pl. 206). There are remnants of gilding on the flat backing behind the letters, which would have really made the plaque ”pop” in its day.
