Stamped Bennington Scroddled Earthenware Ewer and Wash Bowl - Stamped Bennington Scroddled Earthenware Ewer and Wash Bowl Scroddled gray and brown clays flecked or marbled throughout the creamy white earthenware body beneath a thin lead glaze, the pitcher having relief-molded diamond pattern on a tapering body, with molded and applied scrolling handle and curvaceous upswept spout. Bowl is twelve-sided with a smooth rounded interior. Both stamped with Barret ”Type H” oval-form mark on bases reading ?UNITED STATES / POTTERY CO. / BENNINGTON, Vt?. Lyman, Fenton & Co. (The United States Pottery Co.), Bennington, VT. 1849-1858. Dimensions: Pitcher: 11” H, 5 1/8” D base. Bowl: 4 3/8” H, 13 3/8” D rim. Condition: Pitcher: Virtually undamaged with a 3/8” W shallow loss to lowermost extremity of handle and a small base flake; also has a 1” drying line from rim, visible on interior only, as made. Bowl: Undamaged with moderate interior wear/scratching, and some glazed-over firing separations, as made. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Catalogue Note: One of the greatest rarities in Bennington ware is this ”scroddled” type, essentially America's answer to the ”laid agateware” which was made in Staffordshire throughout the 18th century (and beyond). To find any piece of scroddleware is a real treat for a collector, but to find a true matching set like the present set can only be described as an ”extremely rare” event (Barret 1958, p. 120, pl. 170).
