Philadelphia, Pennsylvania attributed Black-Glazed Mid-Size Redware Teapot, possibly Haig - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania attributed Black-Glazed Mid-Size Redware Teapot, possibly Haig Thick metallic black/brown glaze, globular body with faint rouletted beaded bands around the bulged shoulder and below rim plus top surface of cover, applied handle with wide squared medial ridge, flat base with heavy scorch marks obscuring remnants of stilts/kiln furniture in triangular formation to outer edge. First half 19th century. Dimensions: 5 7/8” H, 3 3/8” D base. Condition: Teapot: Excellent condition with a large flake to rim and some roughness/shallow flaking to end of spout. Cover: Very good condition with one large chip to finial and a few scattered flakes to outer rim. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased from Greg Kramer & Co. (Robesonia, Pennsylvania), 05/23/1991. Catalogue Note: This teapot is of a distinctive black-glazed wheel-thrown round type said to have been produced by the Haig family of potters at their Northern Liberties Pottery, which was run by Thomas Haig Sr. until his death in 1831 and afterwards by his sons James and Thomas Jr. (Myers 1980, pg. 63-64). The attribution is based on a teapot purchased from the Haig family by Edwin Atlee Barber, which now resides at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (accession no. ”1892-80a, b”). Similar pots can also be seen at Colonial Williamsburg (object nos. ”2022-55,a&b” and ”2022-56,a&b”) which were formerly in the collection of Susan H. Myers (former Smithsonian Curator of Ceramics and Glass and author of Philadelphia ceramics bible ”Handcraft to Industry”).
