American Green-Glazed Yellowware Toby Jug, Possibly J.E. Jeffords & Co. (Philadelphia, PA) - American Green-Glazed Yellowware Toby Jug, Possibly J.E. Jeffords & Co. (Philadelphia, PA) Glossy green-tinted lead glaze over yellowware body, molded in the form of a tricorn hat-wearing Toby holding a beer pitcher and drinking glass (depicted from the waist up), applied molded handle with spurred thumbrest, no markings located. Late 19th/early 20th century. Dimensions: 5 3/4” H, 2 5/8” D base. Condition: Excellent condition with a small flake to spout and an area of glaze loss to right rear corner of Toby's hat. One small as-made glaze pop to Toby's right shoulder. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased from Robert A. Ellison, Jr. (New York), 02/03/1995. Catalogue Note: Very similar Toby jugs were made at the Philadelphia pottery of J. E. Jeffords & Co. during the late 19th century (Barber 1909, pg. 251-252). They usually show up in a typical brown Rockingham glaze - in this glaze they are the most commonly encountered type of Toby by far, and it is probably safe to say they are one of the single most ubiquitous pieces of American Rockingham ware, period. Examples in color are almost unheard of, but a gilt-decorated blue-glazed example, formerly in the Jay & Emma Lewis collection, can be seen at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where it is under the accession no. ”2008-25-61”. Jeffords is also known to have displayed items in a ”green majolica” glaze at the Centennial - perhaps this Toby is one such piece (Stradling 1976, p. 154).
