Stamped J.E. Jeffords & Co. (Philadelphia, PA) Relief-Molded Yellowware Basketweave Teapot - Stamped J.E. Jeffords & Co. (Philadelphia, PA) Relief-Molded Yellowware Basketweave Teapot Clear lead glaze over buff earthenware/yellowware body, molded lightly-paneled form with intricate basketweave texture across body and spout with oak leaves and acorns below rim, rope-textured handle, and domed cover having an acorn finial. Stamped to underside reading ”FIRE PROOF / J.E. JEFFORDS & CO. / Phila. / Patented June 28 1870”, both teapot and lid also having stamped ”J” bench mark. Fourth quarter 19th century. Dimensions: 5 3/4” H without cover, 7” H with cover. Condition: Teapot excellent with minor high point wear, crazed/stained burn marks to footring, and a seemingly glazed-over circumferential firing separation above the base. Lid undamaged. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased from Yonderhill Antiques (Palisades, New York), 09/04/1975. Catalogue Note: A nearly identical example can be seen in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, object no. 302835 (accession no. ?2008-25-60a, b?). In an 1876 ad, Jeffords illustrates these teapots as ”Basket Pattern” and refers to them as ”Buff Stone-Ware” with ”Patent Corrugated Bottoms”.
