Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Attributed Relief-Molded Redware Shaving Mug, probably Haig - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Attributed Relief-Molded Redware Shaving Mug, probably Haig Sparse brown manganese dots applied at random beneath a clear lead glaze over bright red earthenware clay, molded cylindrical body with pronounced faux-turnings/reeding around a wide central band containing intricate scrolling floral and foliate design, applied interior divider with ledge/shelf, molded handle with squared medial ridge and feathering to top surface, flaring foot with recessed underside. First half 19th century. Dimensions: 4 3/8” H, 4 3/8” D base. Condition: Excellent overall condition with a few scattered flakes to top surface of rim. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased from Ray Roberts, 11/03/2007. Catalogue Note: This mug's molded handle - with the feather-styled decoration on its top surface - is an exact match to the handles on the mugs in the previous two lots, which are attributable to the Haig family's Northern Liberties Pottery. The floral band seems to incorporate thistle into its design, which may have been a patriotic choice by the Haigs, who were of Scotch descent (Myers 1980, pg. 63-64).
