Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Attributed Redware Shaving Mug, probably Haig - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Attributed Redware Shaving Mug, probably Haig Vertically banded sponged manganese beneath a clear lead glaze over bright red earthenware body, wheel-thrown and built form essentially composed of a handleless cup or tiny bowl merged into the wall of a large mug (including handle), three bands of large rouletted round beading, molded handle with squared medial ridge and feathering to top surface, flaring foot with recessed/trimmed underside. First half 19th century. Dimensions: 4 3/4” H, 4” D base. Condition: Excellent overall condition with moderate wear and scratching especially to right side of mug, and a few flakes to top surface of rim, one of which has been recolored black. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Crocker Farm, 11/03/2007. Catalogue Note: Clay color, glazing, and decoration point to Philadelphia - this style of sponged manganese, in vertical or horizontal bands (probably rouletted), is often considered a hallmark of redwares produced by the Haig family of potters at their Northern Liberties Pottery, which was run by Thomas Haig Sr. until his death in 1831 and afterwards by his sons James and Thomas Jr. (Myers 1980, pg. 63-64). That attribution stems from a similarly-sponged redware pitcher, purchased from the Haig family by Edwin Atlee Barber, which now resides at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (accession no. ”1892-78”). On the present example, it is also worth pointing out that the zealously-rouletted beading resembles a type seen on early 19th century redware excavated in Philadelphia (Miller et al. 2017, p. 107). To an extent it also resembles a type seen on the black-glazed round redware teapots in this sale, lots 24 through 26.
