Rare Tucker Porcelain Factory (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) Teapot and Sugar Bowl - Rare Tucker Porcelain Factory (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) Teapot and Sugar Bowl Glossy white porcelain with minimal gilt accents and hand painted polychrome-enamel floral decorations consisting of large roses around the body between gilt sprigs, each with upswept helmet-shaped rim, molded and applied spout and handles, matching covers, no markings located. Circa 1828-1838. Dimensions: Teapot: 5 7/8” H, 10 1/2” L overall. Sugar bowl: 4 1/2” H, 8” L overall. Condition: Teapot: Restoration to tip of spout and a small unrestored flake to rim. Small flake to cover. A discolored line on teapot's interior, not visible on exterior. Sugar bowl: One handle restored. Some flaking to inner rim where the cover rests. Catalogue Note: This shape is very rarely seen in Tucker porcelain, although examples can be found at the Philadelphia Museum of Art with accesion nos. ”1958-99-1a, b” and ”1978-37-3a, b” (teapot) and ”1931-53-10a, b” (sugar bowl). The floral decoration on the present set, striking in its simplicity when compared against the maximalism more commonly seen on Tucker pieces, would seem to fall under the category Edwin Atlee Barber described as ”large bold roses in natural colors” (Barber 1909, p. 148).
