European Faience / Tin-Glazed Earthenware Figural Pastille Burner / Potpourri Vase - European Faience / Tin-Glazed Earthenware Figural Pastille Burner / Potpourri Vase Tin-glazed buff-colored earthenware embellished with extensive polychrome-enamel painting; the bulbous urn-form main vase with pierced rim stands adjacent to an imaginatively modeled tree trunk containing a serpent, with a snail in front, all surrounded by numerous applied leaves and flowers in various colors, constructed on and around a lumpy rectangular base. Northern Europe, probably French or German, possibly Stockelsdorf. Third or fourth quarter 18th century. Dimensions: 4 7/8” H, 6 3/8” x 4” base. Condition: Professional repairs to top quarter of tree trunk and a portion of the rim of the vase; numerous other minor unrestored flakes and losses including to the snail's shell, the applied foliage and flowers, base edges, etc. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection.
