17th Century European Marbled-Slip Decorated Redware Costrel / Flask, probably Italian - 17th Century European Marbled-Slip Decorated Redware Costrel / Flask, probably Italian Marbleized red and off-white slip glazes over pale red earthenware; skinny bottle of baluster form with turned foot, applied lion-form attachment lugs/handles on either side through which a rope is looped. Probably Northern Italy. First half 17th century. Dimensions: 11 3/4” H, 3 3/4” D base. Condition: Excellent condition with a few areas of very shallow glaze exfoliation to body, and some staining/discoloration especially to unglazed areas around foot. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Purchased from Don Winer, 01/02/1980. Catalogue Note: A very similar example can be seen in the British Museum with object number ”1887,0210.88”. Similar examples turn up in early Virginia archaeological assemblages with some frequency (Straube 2001, fig. 16).
