Relief-Molded ”Indian Boy” Pattern Staffordshire Red Stoneware / Redware Teapot - Relief-Molded ”Indian Boy” Pattern Staffordshire Red Stoneware / Redware Teapot Unglazed red stoneware, oblong octagonal paneled body with relief-molded rococo-styled decoration featuring the titular ”Indian Boy” amongst foliage (after a Chinese Yixing original), flanked by Neoclassical figures on either side; applied molded spout and serpent handle. Circa 1750. Dimensions: 3” H without cover, 3 5/8” H with cover. Condition: Teapot has been broken into multiple pieces and professionally repaired, and it is also missing the lower extremity of its handle. Cover fits poorly and appears to be an old replacement. Provenance: The Stradling Study Collection. Garths Auction, 05/06/1989. Ex-Wiltsie Collection (retains sticker). Catalogue Note: Well known as the ”Indian Boy” or ”boy in a tree” pattern. Some have tentatively attributed its manufacture to Thomas Whieldon's Fenton Vivian factory on the basis of matching sherds which were excavated in the 1960s (Elliott 1998, color pl. 14B).
