An armchair made by Ephraim Haines for Bishop William White for use at Christ Church Philadelphia has closely related carved stylized grapes on the crest rail (see Charles E. Peterson, Nicholas L. Gianopulos, and Bruce Cooper Gill, The Building and Furnishing of Christ Church Philadelphia, (Philadelphia: Old Christ Church Preservation Trust, 2001), p. 43). Provenance: Arthur H. Sussel, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Sotheby's New York, Important Americana, January 28-31, 1987, sale 5551, lot 1222; Alan Miller, Quakertown, Pennsylvania; Dudley and Constance Godfrey, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Sotheby’s, New York, Important Americana, January 18, 2018, sale 9820, lot 820 34 1/2 x 74 5/8 x 27 1/2 in. (87.6 x 189.5 x 69.9 cm.) Condition: Overall good condition, nice, old grungy surface. Break to right rear arm near crest. Losses/chips and patches to veneer on apron.
