9” Lobi Carved Wood Figure, Burkina Faso/Ghana - A carved wooden anthropomorphic figure standing on four stylized legs beneath a compact barrel-form body. The figure features an elongated neck, projecting ears, a long facial plane with recessed eyes and projecting nose, and an elaborate crested coiffure decorated with geometric crosshatched carving. Incised geometric ornament appears on the chest and neck, emphasizing the highly abstract treatment of form. Height: approximately 9 inches. Carved from a single piece of wood with a dark surface finish showing extensive wear from handling and age. The underside exhibits abrasion and wear to the feet consistent with long-term use and display. Visible condition issues include wear to the facial features, loss to the tip of the nose, surface abrasions, scratches, shrinkage cracking, finish loss, and a notable loss to the rear right leg area. Additional wear and scattered losses are present throughout the body and coiffure. The figure displays strong sculptural balance through its simplified anatomy, geometric carving, and distinctive four-legged stance. Early to mid-20th century. Condition: Ancient Authentic
