6 1/2” Carved Catalanoite Effigy Statue by Donnie Lemons or Billy Guthrie, 1970s - Human Effigy Statue in Catlinite6 1/2 Inch Carved Stone Figure by Donnie Lemons or Billy Guthrie, 1970sCarved stone human effigy statue made in the 1970s by either Donnie Lemons or Billy Guthrie of the Pike County Illinois and northeast Missouri carving tradition. The figure is carved from reddish brown catlinite and stands 6 1/2 inches tall. It shows a stylized human face with geometric incised lines across the head, chest, and body. Two drilled holes pass through the torso, a design element inspired by ancient Eastern Woodlands human effigy pendants, though this example is a modern folk art statue rather than a wearable piece. The back is flattened and the carving displays the distinctive tool work and shaping associated with the Lemons and Guthrie circle. Both men were known for producing human effigies, animal effigies, pipes, and stone carvings influenced by Mississippian and Hopewell forms. This statue reflects that tradition while standing as a larger decorative interpretation in catlinite.Good example for collectors of human effigies, catlinite carvings, stone statues, and mid 20th century Illinois and Missouri folk art. Condition: Modern
