Monumental West African Carved Hardwood Stool With Zoomorphic Terminals - 27 1/2” Monumental African Prestige Stool - Ex Chuck & Eileen Hoffman Collection A substantial African hardwood stool carved from a single massive block of dense wood. The elongated oval seat is fashioned with a broad saddle-form surface above an openwork support structure, terminating in opposing carved projections at each end. Measuring over 27 1/2 inches in length, the form possesses an imposing architectural presence uncommon among most encountered African stools. The stool displays skilled hand-carved construction throughout. Traditional adze-finished tool marks remain visible on the underside, while the seat and exposed surfaces exhibit a smooth, well-developed patina from age and handling. The robust monoxylous construction demonstrates the maker's ability to balance strength and weight through careful removal of material from the central section. The hardwood utilized is exceptionally dense and well preserved. The stool remains structurally sound with no notable cracking observed, a testament to both the quality of the timber selected and its long-term preservation. Surface wear is consistent with age and use, enhancing the character of the piece without diminishing its strong visual presentation. This example represents a distinctive form of African seating furniture associated with prestige and status. The impressive scale, hand-worked underside, and single-block construction contribute to its appeal for collectors of African art, ethnographic material, and traditional tribal furniture. Ex Chuck & Eileen Hoffman Collection.
