Merwin Hulbert Frontier Army .44 Cal Revolver
Included in this lot is a Merwin Hulbert Frontier Army .44 caliber first model revolver. Merwin, Hulbert & Co. was one of the top four quality revolver manufacturers from 1876 to 1891, along with their famous counterparts, Colt, Smith & Wesson, and Remington. The most distinctive feature of Merwin Hulbert revolvers is their unique ejection system, in which the barrel and cylinder are twisted 90 degrees to the side and then pulled forward until the spent casings fall out. The large frame revolvers, were chambered for the proprietary .44 Merwin Hulbert, .44 Russian and .44-40 WCF cartridges. The square butt versions were known as the "Frontier Army" model. This revolver is roll stamped "Merwin Hulbert & Co. New York U.S.A. Pat. Jan. 24. Apr.21. Dec.15.74. Aug. 3. 75. July 11. 76. Apr. 17. 77. Pat's May 6. 77.” on the top of the 7” barrel and "The Hopkins & Allen Manufacturing Co. Norwich, Conn. U.S.A.” on the left of the barrel. The first model is a single-action, and identified by its 'open top' design, flutes on the cylinder, and a barrel wedge to engage the enclosed cylinder pin. This revolver has a patina'd nickel finish with red and black checkered rubber grips. Serial Number: 9814. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
