Lakota Sioux Fully Beaded Sheath & 19th C. Knife
This is an excellent set showing a fully top beaded knife sheath attributed to the Lakota Sioux Native American Indians and paired with a 19th Century trade knife. The trade knife shows a thick spin blacksmith forged fighting knife with one-piece walnut solid wood handle having a unique curvaceous design being held into place with rivets of iron and adorned with solid brass trade tacks. The knife shows old harness leather gaskets in between the iron and wood. The sheath shows a parfleche rawhide construction which has been covered in Indian tanned supple hide being sinew sewn and adorned across the entire front with a geometric pattern of glass trade seed beads having a greasy blue background and patterns in greasy yellow, cobalt, chalk white and greasy Cheyenne pink. The top of the sheath shows a braided Indian tanned hide belt strap and the outer edge shows fringe with a red ocher dye with large wound glass pony sky padre trade beads. The sheath has a brain smoked finish. The knife has an early age with the sheath being in nearly perfect condition alluding to a professionally restored contemporary finish. Please inspect the pictures of the sheath for your own opinion of age. Knife shows solid condition with a nice authentic patina. The sheath shows perfect condition with little to no bead loss. Knife measures 10 5/8”L with a 6 3/8”L blade. Sheath is 17.5”L with fringe and strap top by 2.75”W.
