Known in the West through its adaptation as the paisley pattern, the boteh may be interpreted as a leaf, a flame, a cypress shoot, or an abstracted floral form. Repeated across the field, it establishes a disciplined rhythm while allowing subtle variations in scale, orientation and color. The rug belongs to the distinguished nineteenth-century weaving traditions of central Persia, where refined drawing and balanced design were combined with a firm, durable structure.
