The characteristic composition generally centers upon a monumental rectangular or octagonal device balanced by strongly articulated corner forms. Karachov Kazaks achieve an effect of extraordinary visual strength through a limited vocabulary of large geometric motifs and contrasting colors. Their drawing can appear strikingly modern despite being rooted in the village weaving traditions of the nineteenth-century Caucasus. The Metropolitan Museum of Art preserves a mid- to late-nineteenth-century Karachov Kazak from the celebrated James F. Ballard Collection, demonstrating the group?s established position within major collections of Islamic textile art.
