The nearly square format gives the design an unusual sense of symmetry and makes the rug especially suitable for a central seating area, library or intimate dining space. Hooked rugs occupy a distinctive place in American textile history. Produced by pulling narrow strips of wool or fabric through a foundation, they enabled makers to create highly individual designs from familiar, often repurposed materials.
