Associated with imperial authority, strength, wisdom and the generative force of nature, the dragon was frequently shown among clouds, waves, mountains or flaming jewels. The substantial room-size format gives the composition an imposing presence, while the graphic treatment of the dragon makes the carpet both a furnishing and an expressive work of textile art. Dragon imagery has a long history in Chinese carpets. The Metropolitan Museum of Art preserves a Qing dynasty Ningxia carpet featuring curvilinear and geometric dragons, along with characteristic fret borders. The comparison demonstrates the motif's historical importance but does not establish a Ningxia attribution for the present carpet.
