Karachov designs achieve their impact through scale and clarity: a relatively small number of monumental forms occupy the field, creating an effect that is at once archaic and remarkably modern. Comparable Karachov Kazaks entered major collections during the formative years of American carpet collecting. The Metropolitan Museum of Art preserves a mid- to late-nineteenth-century example from the James F. Ballard Collection, woven entirely in wool with symmetrically knotted pile.
