Bidspirit auction | WWII Japanese Samurai Sword with

WWII Japanese Samurai Sword with Signed Blade, Ray Skin Saya - A beautiful and interesting WWII-era Japanese samurai sword featuring a signed blade, ornate fittings, and a distinctive ray-skin-covered scabbard. This sword combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship with military-style mountings and remains in excellent original, unrestored condition. The blade measures 20.5 inches (nagasa), with a 1.125-inch kissaki (tip) and a clearly visible hamon (temper line). The 5.25-inch tang (nakago) features a chiseled Japanese signature (mei), consisting of several characters that may identify the swordsmith and place of manufacture. The tang retains a deep, age-darkened patina and has two mounting holes (mekugi-ana), suggesting the possibility of an older blade subsequently remounted for military service. The 10.5-inch tsuka (handle) features traditional brown wrapping over white ray skin (samegawa), decorative floral menuki, and attractive brass-toned fittings. The ornate tsuba (guard) and associated hardware display a wonderful original patina. The seppa (spacers) and mounting hardware are present, with several components bearing the matching assembly number 5. The exceptionally attractive saya (scabbard) measures 29.75 inches, noticeably longer than the blade itself. It features a distinctive ray-skin covering, decorative metal fittings, and an original suspension ring. The scabbard retains its characteristic patterned finish and aged hardware. Overall, this sword is in excellent original, unrestored condition, showing expected age and patina throughout. The signed blade, visible hamon, matching-numbered fittings, and distinctive scabbard are notable features of this WWII-era Japanese sword.
