Bidspirit auction | Japanese Naginata Signed Masahisa 1823

Japanese Naginata Signed Masahisa 1823 NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Certified - An impressive antique Japanese naginata dating to the Edo period, accompanied by NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon certification issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword). The certificate, dated February 21, 2028 in the Japanese Reiwa calendar (Reiwa 10), identifies the blade as a naginata signed Honjo Nidai Masahisa, with an inscription dating its manufacture to the second month of Bunsei 6 (1823). The certificate bears identification number 1023946. The beautifully shaped steel blade features the distinctive sweeping curvature and elongated point characteristic of traditional Japanese naginata. A prominent irregular hamon is visible along the cutting edge, while an elongated groove decorates the lower portion of the blade. The polished surface displays the blade's workmanship, with some scattered minor surface marks and age-related imperfections. The exceptionally long tang retains its original dark patina and features Japanese inscriptions on both sides, along with a single mounting hole. The inscriptions include the smith's signature and additional characters associated with the blade's manufacture. The naginata is fitted with a long, natural-finish wooden handle and a matching curved wooden saya (scabbard). These simple wooden mounts provide an attractive presentation while allowing the blade to be safely stored and displayed. The accompanying NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon certificate is particularly noteworthy. This designation recognizes Japanese swords considered especially worthy of preservation based on their historical and artistic merit. The original certification paperwork and envelope are included, as shown in the photographs. A desirable Edo-period Japanese naginata with an elegantly shaped blade, extensive tang inscriptions, and important NBTHK documentation confirming its attributed maker and historical period.
