Bidspirit auction | Japanese Raden Mother-of-Pearl Mosaic Scabbard
Japanese Raden Mother-of-Pearl Mosaic Scabbard with Decorative Tsuka - An exceptionally attractive Japanese scabbard featuring intricate raden mother-of-pearl mosaic inlay and finely detailed traditional Japanese fittings. The scabbard is covered in hundreds of individually fitted pieces of iridescent shell, creating a striking mosaic of shimmering colors. The accompanying tsuka (grip) features traditional brown cord wrapping over textured ray skin (samegawa), accented by decorative metal ornaments (menuki) depicting aquatic motifs. The dark metal fittings display finely executed designs, including seashells, flowing waves, and other marine-inspired decorations. An elaborate brown woven cord is secured around the upper portion of the scabbard. The combination of colorful shell inlay, detailed metalwork, and traditional Japanese craftsmanship makes this a particularly appealing example of decorative sword furniture. Overall length measures approximately 23.75 inches, with the tsuka measuring 17.25 inches as provided. The piece remains in excellent overall condition, displaying attractive coloration and intricate decorative details. Minor areas of wear and shell loss are visible near the lower scabbard fitting. Offered as a standalone scabbard and tsuka assembly only, without a blade. An unusual and visually impressive addition to a collection of Japanese swords, fittings, or decorative Japanese antiques.
