Rare translation of the poem by Homer // Мinsky (pseudonym, real name: Vilenkin), Nikolay Маksimovich (1855 - 1937) – Russian writer. Graduated from the faculty of law of St. Petersburg University (1879). Started to be published since 1876 (since 1877 – in "Vestnik Еvropy" (Bulletin of Europe)). Minsky's poems, which were largely imitative and rational, were sympathetically received by the populists during these years. In No.1 of the underground newspaper "Narodnaya Volya" (The People's Will) (September 1879) M.'s poem "The Last Confession" was published, the subject of which I.E. Repin used in the picture "Refusal of Confession before Execution" (1879-1885). In 1883 the censors destroyed the collection "Poems". Being in the general vein of "poetry of people's sorrow", Minsky's poems, however, are far from hating the oppressors. In 1884 he wrote an article "Old controversy" – Russia's first "Decadents" program, declaring individualism up to "the self-deification of the individual in doing, in creation". Translated "Iliad" by Homer (1896), works by P. Verlaine, P.B. Shelley ("Queen Mab", "Alastor"), G. Byron, G. Flaubert ("Salammbô", 1913). The first translation of the Iliad was begun by N. I. Gnedich in 1809 and finished only twenty years later. Slavic words often found in translation are difficult to grasp and understand. Therefore N.M. Minsky attempted his own translation of the Iliad, avoiding Old Slavic words and expressions and using more modern vocabulary.

Condition is satisfactory, the cover has tears on the edge, the unbacked book is weak, fringe of pages.
