The Marine Trust Limited - July 8th, 1940: A typed letter by Eliezer Siegfried Hoofien, signed. Letter of recommendation: In the letter, addressed to "to all whom it may concern", Hoofien talks about his former employee, Mr. David Toporovsky and explains that they had to let him go only because The Marine Trust had to close its offices "due to the stoppage of shipping in the Mediterrenean occasioned by the present international situation." Mr. Toporovsky was one of the first workers of the Tel Aviv port. He died tragically at age 27. There are two copies of the letter of recommendation, one in English, with Hoofein's English signature and one in Hebrew, with his Hebrew signature.
אליעזר זיגפריד הופיין היה פעיל ציוני יליד הולנד, רואה חשבון בהכשרתו. אחרי עלייתו לארץ ישראל בשנת 1912, היה למנכ"ל בנק אנגלו-פלשתינה בשנים 1925–1947 ויושב ראש מועצת המנהלים שלו בשנים 1947–1957. בתקופתו שונה שם הבנק מ"חברת אנגליא-פלשתינה" ל"בנק אנגלו-פלשתינה" ואחר כך ל"בנק לאומי לישראל". עוד בצעירותו שיחק תפקיד נכבד בניהול הבנק בימי מלחמת העולם הראשונה. באותה תקופה פעל מטעם הג'וינט במתן סיוע לתושבים היהודים שנשארו בארץ ישראל, בשנים האחרונות של השלטון העות'מאני.
