TWO OHIO STONEWARE JUGS - Includes a Muskingum County two-gallon jug with cobalt tornadoes, 14” high; together with a decorated two-gallon jug by Alderman and Scott of Belpre, 14” high. Justus Alderman (1837-1888) was born in Morgan County to Hosea Alderman and Hannah Reynolds. He was the youngest of at least eight children, many of whom also became successful and wealthy in businesses throughout the Ohio River Valley. (Eli Alderman was a merchant in McConnellsville before moving to Missouri to retire, C.B. Alderman was a merchant in Ironton, Arza Alderman was president of the National Bank in McConnellsville and retired in his mid-40s, and Vinton Alderman was a trader and lumber dealer in Belpre.) “Scott” might be Isaac Scott, who was a Washington County merchant in the area of Ludlow or James A. Scott, another merchant who operated in the area for a period of time. Provenance: a Pennsylvania collection.
