PAIR OF OHIO PORTRAITS - Huron County, c. 1830, oils on canvas. Identified on the back as Lamon and Julia Harkness. She wears a black dress with pink ribbon and lace trim, he wears a black suit and holds a book. 28.5” high, 22.75” wide (sight); 28.5” 35” high, 29” wide (original frames). Lamon Gray Harkness was born in Salem, New York, in 1801, and moved to Ohio as a young man, where he married Julia Follet in Sandusky, Ohio, in 1829. They had at least six children over the next 16 years, as Lamon established himself as a respected doctor in the community, before leaving medicine in 1832 and going into partnership with local businessmen to buy the land and lay out the town of Bellevue. From this point on, he seems to have largely been engaged in business as a merchant. Julia died in 1870, and after that, Lamon seems to have moved between the homes of his children, until his death in Cleveland in 1880. There are stickers on the backing paper that identify the sitters and that also read “T.H. White,” but the portraits are unsigned and relined.
