MINIATURE OHIO BLANKET CHEST - George Sweeney, Stark County, 1841, walnut and poplar. Dovetailed box on a bracket base, and the interior with a false bottom revealing a secret compartment that is inscribed ”MADE BY GEORGE SWEENEY FOR WILLISON SWEENEY STARK COUNTY OHIO 1841 {TO KEEP HIS MONEY}”. 8.5” high, 15.5” wide, 8.5” deep. Hageman, Ohio Furniture Makers v. 2, indicates that John Willison, and George Sweeney advertised in the Ohio Repository (Canton) in March 1843 that they were cabinet and chair makers on Tuscarawas Street and made a variety of furniture that ”shall not be excelled by any in the western Country.” We haven't been able to specifically identify Willison Sweeney, but he was likely the child of a marriage between members of the two families.
