OHIO COBALT-DECORATED STONEWARE JAR - Havens family, Athens or Muskingum County, mid-19th century. Slightly ovoid 2-gallon jar with lug handles and brushed cobalt decoration, including capacity mark, trees, and stars. Stamped ”HAVENS” with backwards ”S”. 11.5” high. Potter Charles C. Havens (1803-1888) was born in New Jersey and came west to Muskingum County by the mid-1830s. Two of his sons and two of his grandsons became potters, with all documentary evidence placing them in Muskingum County. In Jim Murphy's ”Checklist, ” he illustrates two pieces with the same mark as the present jar--with the backwards ”S”. One of those is also stamped ”OAK-DALE, ” possibly referring to Oak Dale in Athens County, to the south. It is not known which Havens made the handful of jars and jugs with this distinctive mark, but they are clearly the work of this important southeast Ohio pottery family.
