OHIO CIVIL WAR PRESENTATION SWORD - Clauberg, M1850 presentation-grade staff and field officer's sword. 32” sword with damascus finish, gilt ”US” on one side and eagle and shield on the other, gilt ”IRON PROOFED” on the spine, and marked on the ricasso. The brass guard with acorn basket and an eagle head, wire-wrapped German silver grip, and jeweled pommel (red glass or garnets). The German silver and brass scabbard with ”US” engraved on one side of the central mount, and the other side with ”US, ” trophy, and Civil War soldier on the mounts. Near the top is engraved ”Presented to Lieut. W.H. Williams by the Citizens of the 3rd Ward Portsmouth, Ohio.” 39” long (overall). William Huston Williams (1840-1920) was born and lived in Portsmouth, Ohio, marrying his first wife, Nancy Aroyse in 1866, but she died in 1869. He married again in 1877 to Clara ?Dolly? Humble (1858-1943). At the outbreak of the Civil War, Williams enlisted in Company A of the 39th OVI. His first two years of service were in the western theater where he saw considerable action. When he re-enlisted (as a captain) in late 1863, the unit moved south to Atlanta, and accompanied Gen. Sherman?s march to the sea. His post-war life was successful, including serving as the Scioto County recorder. He long suffered, and eventually died, from ?malarial dysentery? that he contracted while with Sherman in Atlanta.
