OHIO PEN AND INK DRAWING - Pen and ink landscape drawing comprising a romantic scene titled “Moonlight on theHudson, followed by ”With a pen By Emma Moores at Southworth’s School of Design, Lebanon, O.” In a period (probably original) frame, 20” high by 22” wide. Emmawas born in Ohio in 1852 or 1853, and is listed in the 1870 census as living with Dr.Abigah Miles and his wife, Mary, in Cincinnati. The 1871 and 1872 Cincinnati citydirectories each list Emma as boarding at 43 West 9th Street, which is the household ofDr. Miles. While it is possible she was simply boarding, it is more likely that she wasemployed as a domestic worker by the Miles family.By 1873 Emma was drawing at Southworth’s School in Lebanon. Unfortunately, Emmathen disappears from the documentary record. Most likely, she married in the 1870s soby the 1880 census, she was listed under a different surname.Little is known about A.A. Southworth’s school in Lebanon. Based on the very few otherdrawings that are known, it was variously known as Southworth’s School of Design, Southworth’s Normal Art Training School, and Southworth’s Institute of Penmanship. It was ashort-lived school—by 1879, Southworth had moved west and was teaching drawing atthe Northern Indiana Normal School. This lot is eligible for pick-up or in-house shipping.
