RELIEF-CARVED BUST OF A NATIVE AMERICAN - Initialed ”FAR” and dated 1910, poplar. High relief-carved profile bust mounted on its original plaque, all with its original, alligatored finish. 19.75” high, 15.5” wide. Found near Lake Erie, and thus the cat on the shoulder may be a reference to the Erie Indians, who were referred to as ”Cat Nation” or ”Cat People.” The nickname first appeared in a 1639 Huron Dictionary as a translation of the originally reported French name: Eriehronon or Eriquehronon.
