SIGNED PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN BY JOHN BREWSTER JR. (CONNECTICUT/MAINE, 1766-1854) - Oil on canvas, signed in pencil on the stretcher, ”John Brewster painter March 6th, 1828.” Half-length portrait of a gentleman with dark hair wearing a white shirt, white waistcoat and black coat with one hand inside the front closure. 29” high, 24.5” wide (sight); in a period frame, 35.5” high, 30.75” wide. This portrait was acquired by the seller's mother in the early 1950s in Easthampton, MA. This portrait was included in a 1961 exhibition of Brewster's work that originated at the Connecticut Historical Society, and then traveled to Colby College, and finally to the Addison Gallery Phillips Academy in Andover, MA. It was discussed in Nina Fletcher Little, ”John Brewster, Jr. 1766-1854. Deaf-Mute Portrait Painter of Connecticut and Maine, ” which appeared in the October 1960 issue of the Connecticut Historical Society Bulletin in advance of the exhibition. Condition: Good; conserved, including lining, and a repaired corner tear with associated inpainting.
