OHIO SAMPLER - Sarah Ladd, Worthington, Franklin County, Ohio, March 1825. Diminutive sampler, with flowers and a fancy border, and with the teacher's name: Cynthia Barker ”Perceptress Industry.” In a slightly later frame, 9.5” high, 15.25” wide (overall). John Ladd was born in 1794 in Rhode Island and married Lydia Brown, having moved to Ohio while young, according to his obituary. The Ladd family remained in Franklin County, Ohio, until 1851, when they moved west to Kansas, following a number of their children to settle in the Kansas City area. Sarah Potter Ladd, their oldest child, was born in 1813, in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, and does not seem to have married until she was 67 years old. Sarah died in 1892. Cynthia Barker is listed as a ?perceptress? in the teacher?s index in Sue Studebaker, Ohio Is My Dwelling Place, and a letter from her, dated 1813 and referencing the local Native Americans, is reprinted in Emily Foster (ed.), The Ohio Frontier, p. 136.
