EARLY MARIETTA, OHIO DAY BOOK - 1830s-1840s. Folio book filled with daily transactions, selling various goods, including tea coffee, sugar, paper, nails, etc., as well as for labor. It was used by an unidentified Marietta merchant, later fashioned into a scrapbook with newspaper clippings. Visible entries begin in 1831 and run through 1847, listing purchases by a variety of prominent early families, including Putnam, Hildreth, Pratt, Gates, Dyar, Fearing, Devol, and others. Three children signed the book, some of them multiple times in multiple places: Charles Hollister, Mary A. Hollister, and Anna M. Reppert. Charles and Mary were first cousins, as their fathers, Jonathan Judson Hollister and Richard Davis Hollister, were brothers. All three were born between 1844 and 1845, and the 1860 census indicates that Richard Davis Hollister and James Reppert appear to be neighbors. Despite the lack of the original owner's identity, the day book provides a fascinating insight into the lives of those living on along the Ohio River at the dawn of the steamboat era.
