MANSFIELD, OHIO FAMILY RECORD - H.E. Emmett, signed and dated 1905 lower right, ink and watercolor on paper. Large size, with the family tree for the Shrader family, flanked by two figures on decorated pedestals. In its original frame, 36” square. The artist of this family record, Henry E. Emmett, was born in England around 1864 and arrived in the United States in 1898. His wife Maria Shrader Greer (1853-1928) was the fifth of ten children born to Edward Shrader (1820-1870) and Julia Aungst (1827-1905) of Richland County, OH. Married first to Samuel Greer and widowed in 1884 with three children, Maria would marry Henry Emmett in 1902. Emmett had no children of his own. The date in his signature on this record matches the year of the death of Julia Shrader, Maria's mother, who was, her obituary notes, ill for quite some time before her death, so it seems reasonable to believe Emmett may have been inspired to create this for his wife's family to mark the loss of their mother. Condition: Even toning, some minor staining, some losses (a few lines of bug damage and the upper right margin with a thin loss)
