OHIO LATE CLASSICAL CHEST OF DRAWERS - Carroll County, c. 1840, curly maple and poplar. Ogee-framed top drawer, over three graduated drawers flanked by scrolled and ebonized pilasters and feet. 47” high, 44” wide, 22” deep. A detailed inscription inside the chest indicates that it was made by William Holmes and descended through his family until the late 20th century. William Holmes (1810-1892) was born in Carroll County, Ohio, and in 1830, he married Margaret Junkins in neighboring Tuscarawas County. Holmes, regularly listed in census records as a farmer, had at least eight children with Margaret, including Rebecca (1833-1916), who would married Isaac Williams (1830-1901). Rebecca's daughter Ida Jane was born in 1858 in Tuscarawas County, married a Samuel Vertner, and according to the inscription, bequeathed the chest to her only daughter and oldest child, Vianna, who was born in 1878, married Christopher Naas, and died in Ohio in 1966. The chest then passed to their Vianna?s daughter, Helen Naas Crone, who died in Wooster in 2000, and from whose estate it was presumably acquired. On the back of the chest is an early shipping label indicating that the chest was shipped to Isaac and Rebecca, then living in Allen County. This may have been in the 1860s when Holmes broke up his Tuscarawas County home and moved to Allen County. Condition: Refinished, minor losses to cockbeading
