PORTRAIT OF JAMES SPAFFORD DICKERSON - New Jersey, 1840-1850, oil on canvas. Seated portrait of a man in black, with a high foreheard, on an Edward Dechaux canvas. In a period and elaborate gesso and gilt frame. 33.5” high, 26.5” wide (sight); 44” high, 37.5” wide (overall). Dickerson (1808-1883) lived his entire life in Chester and was a wealthy farmer, and ultimately listed in the death records as ”Gentleman.” Condition: Painting with craquelure and sagging, damage and loss to frame.
