PORTRAIT OF PEARL HAYWARD BY SILAS JEROME UHL (OHIO, 1841-1916) - Pencil on paper, elaborately inscribed, signed, and dated 1907. Portrait of a seated young man wearing a suit. Matted and framed. 11.75” high, 9” wide (sight); 22.5” high, 18.5” wide (overall). The sketch is inscribed: ”Snowy and Wintry Weather? in the upper left, ?Sketches at the Hospital? in the upper right, ?Sketched by inmate Jerome on April 14th, 1907 at 405 S. Fountain Ave. Springfield, Ohio? lower left, ? Pearl P. Hayward 33 [degree sign]? in the lower center and ?S. Jerome Uhl 4-14-07 with best wishes of many happy returns? in the lower right. Pearl Phillips Hayward (1874-1939) was from Springfield, served as a quartermaster sergeant in the 3rd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry in the war with Spain, 1898-99. He worked as a mattress manufacturer. Condition: Even toning, drawing appears to be glued to backing board, but not removed from frame for examination.
